and fall by the wayside and just as many seem to get caught up in a single look and duplicate it ad infinitum. Fortunately, this is not always the case. For as long as we can remember, Tobey Dodge has been making memorable days for couples taking the plunge.
We’d been trying to catch up for awhile and, well, with everyone being so busy, that can be tough. Finally, though, we ran into each other the last week at the official launch of the OC/LA chapter of Wish Upon a Wedding and got to talking. I didn’t yet know that Tobey was involved with OC/LA Wish Upon a Wedding but, as it turns out, she’s their Medical Outreach Chair. Which means, essentially, that Tobey ‘s out there on the front lines, meeting couples, talking with them and hearing their stories. When Tobey told me this, I think the first thing I asked her was “what inspired you to do that”? Her answer was simple; she wanted to do something out of her comfort zone. She wanted to stretch. She wanted to grow. She wanted to give back.
It’s this sort of willingness to try something new that got Tobey started in this industry. She was working with graphics when a minister approached her for help with some business cards (so maybe it was divine intervention that got her started). After working with her, he told her that she had just the personality for weddings. One thing led to another and this former art teacher was making an art of wedding days in no time.
And so she began. What started as part time work on the weekends became The Wedding Connection by Tobey Dodge. Over the years, her business has grown and grown, largely in part because she loves what she does. It’s her desire to give that keeps her in love with her work. One would think anything could become monotonous after so many years, no matter how much you enjoy it. So, I asked Tobey how she keeps it fresh. Her approach? To keep it fresh, keep it personal. Give. All couples have similar desires when it comes to their wedding day; they want them to run smoothly and they want to enjoy them. But each couple is unique. They have their own story, their own personalities. They are of different creeds and cultures. It’s connecting personally with each couple that makes the difference. She’s seen a lot of couples and watched a lot of trends come and go. Some she loved and others, I think we might all like to forget. When we talked about what Tobey is seeing a lot of this year, it’s those personal touches, couples moving away from glamorous celebrations and into celebrations of distinction. Every year, we see trends come and pass and this particular trend is one that we’re hearing across the board – from all over the industry. Of any trend we’ve seen over the years, and we’ve seen a lot, we hope this one sticks. Tobey does, too.
